THE VISION:
To build a permanent facility providing orphans with a building that will accommodate 60 children, a library so the children can study properly and access information, a clinic area, indoor bathrooms and an indoor kitchen so that the children’s’ risk of waterborne disease is lessened, two deep wells so that there is always water, and outdoor facilities to support them when electricity is unavailable, a van to drive the children to the medical clinic and land to operate their own farm thus becoming self sufficient and learning skills for life.
HOW WE BECAME INVOLVED:
In 2009, while working on a Design and Architectural project for a church in the City of St. Louis, Laura was approached by three architecture students, Kent Fauska a congregant, Greg Wanko, and Mike Czajka, for help in their endeavor to design an orphanage in the Village of Agu, Uganda. Knowing that most projects of this sort fail before they can become a reality, Laura made a commitment to the students and to the Atai Orphanage Fund. Laura is now on the Board of Directors to serve in all aspects she can, to make this project a reality for the 54 children who are in need of the most basics to live. Laura is committed to the goal of providing leadership, assistance and accountability to the architectural process for this challenge. This entails working with the students, the board, and others for the research, design, architectural process, construction and sustainability for the building of the orphanage.
The well is currently the 1st priority.
