| Title: | 0208 | | Project: | New Residence | | Location: | Sunset Hills, MO | | Year Completed: | 2003 |
Description:
Goals and Needs Program:
- A new home grounded with old world Mediterranean style charm. To make it feel as if it has already aged like a fine European wine.
- Design the house refining the clients’ idea sketches.
- Place the new home on family property.
Challenge:
- Design a home that incorporates the elements of time and history.
Concept Solution
- True to tradition, incorporate history of the family and site by salvaging stone from the client’s family home and save mature trees for a sense of permanence.
- Contrast the open flexible arrangement of modern living by providing each area with its own distinctive sense of place.
- Incorporate eclectic design details to a unified composition for the concept of being passed down through generations.
- Create unusual surprise spaces for intrigue and interest.
- Allude to the structural type, massing proportion and detailing of Mediterranean style homes.
- Select materials displaying artesian hand craftsmanship reminiscent of an era before mechanization.
Supporting Design Features:
- Arches, columns, alcoves.
- Rooms are linked by a 42’ long interior loggia that offers views of the terrace and garden beyond.
- Plastered walls & ceilings with radius corners. Living room has a 15’ high wood ceiling with clear-story windows with decorative iron work.
- The kitchen has an assemblage of cabinet styles and hardware that give it a “collected over time” feel.
- The kitchen and 2nd floor borrow light from a unique surprise two-story light shaft evoking a feeling of hidden passage.
- Window dormers edged with “clay” roofing tiles and iron balcony.
- Second floor short walls and sloped ceilings for attic coziness
- Exterior hand toweled E.I.F.S. resembles aged stucco while gaining insulative value.
- Formal rear garden façade.
