Title:Interior 0236
Project:Custom Basement Renovation
Location:Town & Country, MO
Year Completed:2004

Description:

Goals & Needs: Program:

  • Transform an unfinished basement to a finished design
  • Reflect the owner’s interests in art, wine tasting, children’s activities and entertaining.
  • Incorporate stone fireplaces and maintain high ceilings.
Challenge:
  • Create order using strong design clarity, where existing structure, utilities, and fireplaces all seemingly haphazardly placed would look intentionally placed.
  • Break down the scale, give a sense of character, comfort, place, and outdoor space to a large cavernous space, the only natural light being a pair of french doors leading to an outdoor pool area.
Concept Solution:
  • Organize spaces purposefully through a datum; using an axis for visual continuity and direct circulation with elements of repeating geometric shapes.
  • Stage the varying activities using variation within repetition to creates interest.
  • Characteristics of a Tuscan “loggia” bring the concept to life by creating a rhythm with columns, ceiling coffering, and arches
  • Subtly reflect the events in a painting’s contents along the circulation spine. A 30ft landscape mural links the activities. A vineyard is depicted adjacent to the wine area and transitions past the game area and craft room eventually terminating in the family room adjacent to the swimming pool exit depicting the sea .
  • Octagonal shapes emphasize arrival and change in direction in the axis.
Supporting Design Features
  • Textured walls, and ironwork give a rustic look.
  • Octagonal shaped wine tasting area & cellar with hand hewn beams, bamboo “roofing”, and an up lighted sky mural.
  • Arrival point, an octagonal stairway landing boasting a saltwater fish tank. At the opposite end is a custom art glass window illuminating the entertainment bar by borrowing natural light from an adjacent exercise room.
